Language enables children to engage emotionally, socially, cognitively, imaginatively and aesthetically in relationships and cultural experiences. It empowers children to develop their thinking, expression, reflection, critique and empathy, and it supports the development of self-efficacy, identity and full participation in society.” – NCCA, “Primary Language Curriculum”, p. 18.
The NCCA is currently revising the Primary School Curriculum. Stages 1 and 2 (Junior Infants – Second Class) of the new Primary Language Curriculum have been published. The phased introduction of the New Language Curriculum commences in the 2016-2017 school year. Your school, therefore, will soon be using the New Language Curriculum added for English and Gaeilge. The new curriculum emphasises integration between the two languages, using the same structure and strands for both subjects.
Accessing the New Language Curriculum Added to the Primary Planning Tool
The strands, elements and learning outcomes of the new language curriculum are included in the Primary Planning Tool. During the transition period, you will have access to both the new and old curriculum content within the Primary Planning Tool. As a result, it ensures a smooth transition for you when planning for the new curriculum.
